‘Orange Is The New Black’ Producers Establish Real-Life Justice a now-deceased character on the show played by actress Samira Wiley.
Orange Is the New Black is Netflix’s most-watched original series. A new Emmy rule in forced the series to change categories from comedy to drama. Orange Is the New Black is the first series to score Emmy nominations in both comedy and drama categories. The series begins revolving around Piper Chapman Taylor Schilling , a woman in her thirties living in New York City who is sentenced to 15 months in Litchfield Penitentiary, a minimum-security women’s federal prison in upstate New York.
Chapman was convicted of transporting a suitcase full of drug money for her girlfriend Alex Vause Laura Prepon , an international drug smuggler. The offense had occurred 10 years before the start of the series and in that time Chapman had moved on to a quiet, law-abiding life among New York’s upper middle class.
In prison, Chapman is reunited with Vause who named Chapman in her trial, resulting in Chapman’s arrest , and they re-examine their relationship. Simultaneously, Chapman, along with the other inmates, attempt to grapple with prison’s numerous, inherent struggles. Episodes often feature flashbacks of significant events from various inmates’ and prison guards’ pasts. These flashbacks typically depict how an inmate came to be in prison or develop a character’s backstory.
The fifth season shows the prisoners revolting against the guards, wardens and the system after MCC’s failed handling of an inmate’s death at the hands of a guard in the fourth season. The inmate death had followed a peaceful protest and subsequent instigation of an inmate fight by another guard. Fueled by the conditions the inmates are forced to tolerate, as well as grudges against the prison guards, a three-day riot ensues.
During the riot, some inmates attempt to negotiate better living conditions and seek justice for the death of the inmate, while others pursue their own interests and entertainment, and a few seek no involvement.
‘Orange Is the New Black’ writer dating actress Samira Wiley
It’s based on a true story: Piper Kerman Piper Chapman in the show was a nice upper-middle class girl living in upstate New York, when all of a sudden the Feds came knocking. Seems ten years earlier, Piper had carried drug money for girlfriend Alex Vause. She was tried, convicted, and spent around a year in a minimum security prison. Her whole life, her relationship with friends, family and fiance, were totally messed up. And to make things even more complicated, Alex was at the same prison for a time.

In what is arguably the greatest love story of our time, or at least this week in particular, “Orange Is The New Black” writer Lauren Morelli has broken up with her husband and since begun dating Samira Wiley , the actress who plays Poussey on the show. According to Morelli , it was writing scenes for Piper and Alex that gave her clarity on her own sexuality.
I realized I was gay in fall , one of my first days on the set. It wasn’t so much one thing, but the sum of many small details: how uncomfortable I felt around groups of lesbians or how I considered myself shrug a “not very sexual person. Wanting to read a book instead of have sex is a perfectly reasonable preference to have, right?
But on set, these small moments came into sharp relief, and I found myself answering to an endless stream of cast members who peppered me with questions like a gaggle of kindergartners curious about their new teacher. I was finally forced to consider a question that had never, ever occurred to me before: Holy shit, am I gay? TMZ goes on to report that the divorce has gone amicably following the couple’s two years of marriage, with Morelli keeping her Lexus and her ex-husband getting the Mazda hatchback, etc.
Yet, as interesting as dividing up luxury vehicles and non-luxury vehicles may be the obvious point of this story is that Morelli is now in a relationship with Poussey and our hearts are just swelling with love right now and, hey, they look so good together in this Instagram:. Read Morelli’s essay in its entirety over at Mic.
‘Orange Is The New Black’ Producers Establish Real-Life Justice Fund In Honor Of Beloved Character
And now we know that it’s coming to an end: Season 7 will be the show’s last. Her upper-class, WASP lifestyle is challenged by the women around around her who expose her to worldviews far beyond her own. For six seasons, Piper and her fellow Litchfield Penitentiary inmates have gone through the rigamarole of prison life, from abusive situations with guards to romantic personal relationships to pregnancies to addiction to police brutality.
Look, Laura Prepon [the actress who plays Piper’s on-again, off-again girlfriend and fellow inmate] is really hot. I guess it’s weird. Yeah, it’s weird.
I was underdressed the day we shot Larry’s pivotal phone call with Piper for the first season of Orange is the New Black. It was 9 degrees on Fifth Avenue, and I wore New Balances and a pair of wool socks — but I sucked it up because this was the climax of their season-long arc: A scene where both characters are finally forced to be honest after months of lying to each other.
It was a scene I’d written with words shamelessly borrowed from my own life, and as I watched Jason Biggs repeat “I don’t know if you can,” after Piper begs him to let her fix her mistakes, the world around me swirled in a dizzying blur of life imitating art. Or vice versa — it’s hard to say sometimes. By the end of the day I mostly was trying not to cry, and I also couldn’t feel my feet.
In any story worth telling, there’s conflict. And so, while it certainly would have been disorienting to begin to question my sexuality after three decades of knowing myself, it was particularly blinding because I’d gotten married only a few months before. It was the sort of wedding that makes you believe in absolute partnership and the strength that can come from facing obstacles, like the life-threatening illness that my new husband had battled for the majority of our relationship.
But he was healthy again, so we danced under strings of Christmas lights and drank fancy cocktails that were served in mason jars, all while being surrounded by the friends and family who had held us up over the previous six years. Which is why it’s now a punch in the gut every time I have to say, “I’m getting divorced because I’m gay. For those of you keeping track, I’m definitely not exaggerating and I’m not prone to hyperbole, ever.
Often, after I make the declaration in as casual a voice as I can manage, the next question is, “Did you know? The thing is, even when you find yourself in a minority, there’s always a majority. There was a prescribed narrative, and everything about my own story challenged the accepted one.

She was born on May 29th in Mobile, Alabama, and raised by a single mother and her grandmother. In , she opened up about being bullied as a child, and how after being called a sissy and the F-word, she attempted suicide at age And so I was called sissy, I was called the F-word.

Things eventually got better and the actress studied creative writing and dance while at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, then at Indiana University Bloomington before finally switching to Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, where she studied acting. Laverne Cox was one of the original cast members on Orange Is the New Black , playing the trans woman Sophia Burset who was in prison for stealing credit cards and using them to finance her transition.
Cox’s character showed just how many injustices trans women, in particular, face. However, Burset does eventually find a happy ending after she is selected for early release in the show’s penultimate season. She ends up working in a salon in the final season, presumably living a happy life after also reconciling with ex-wife Crystal and son Michael.

Alysia Reiner might just be the low-ley coolest mom in Manhattan. No, Reiner is the coolest mom in Manhattan because she and her husband fellow actor and producer David Alan Basche actually built their year-old daughter a treehouse in their backyard in Harlem. Adding that, even though she spends plenty of time out in LA due to her work as an actress and producer, she finds that New York wins every time. Joking aside, Reiner and her family seem to thriving here in the city.
With such a full plate, one might assume that Reiner has the age-old work-life balance question figured out. We often end up bringing in a third person to pick up the slack—or many people! Be it a housekeeper or a babysitter or a family member. The question of finding your truth—and living it—be it at home or at work or both is not only a central theme when Reiner talks about her values as a mother, but also a central one to many of the characters she plays. Of course, Reiner knows a thing or two about dark comedy.
And we, as woman, are taught to be nice and good and likable.
