Bailey wears his heart on his sleeve, both on stage and off stage, and he brought an emotional authenticity to this contemporary that several other contestants lacked during their performances. That said, Vlad nailed the choreography, even though the contemporary learning curve can be quite steep. Aleksandr does rock the clean-shaven look, though! With a little more time to practice, I think Benjamin could have executed this flawlessly and what he did manage to do on Monday was pretty darn good, too. But he had a Moment capital M! He and Lauren did fall out of sync more than once, which was a bummer, but Gino still remains one of the most adaptable dancers in the Top Even though some of his Academy performances suggested otherwise. But I was totally charmed by this hip-hop routine, which Eddie approached with surprising effortlessness and even more surprising swagger.

Amy Yakima and Fik-Shun Stegall: Meet the winners of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’

This season will continue with the new format that premiered on season 9, which is one two-hour episode per week. A slight change in the format occurred during the first live show not the Top 20 showcase where the eliminations were done at the start of the episode instead of at the end like in the previous season. However, the change wasn’t very well supported by viewers and was disliked by a large majority. On July 4th, , Nigel announced via Twitter that they have decided to return to the previous format of revealing America’s vote at the end of the show and announcing the eliminations at the end.

During weeks 7, 8, and 9 different all-stars from past seasons came and partnered up with a contestant for that week.

Guest judge Jesse Tyler Ferguson nearly has a panic attack because he loves everyone so much; two of the Top 6 shuffle home. Jesse Tyler Ferguson somehow managed to playfully diss former guest judge Carly Rae Jepsen to the delight of Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy , announce his major crush on a contestant Aaron! I think the world of Amy otherwise — maybe it was just the high-strung orchestra, but that solo of hers tonight had me so stressed out!

Fik-Shun was completely charming and I loved being reminded of the style by which he arrived here. Yowsers — what exactly is it about Kathryn? I can never stop watching her. But this is about Paul, and he did gamely keep up — in leather pants. Thank you! Hilary Swank did. Hayley surprised everyone here by charging out of the gate with Legit Hip Hop Face, which lasted her at least half of the challenging routine.

They certainly did make season 4 winner Joshua work for his return.

Lawrenceville Woman Makes Top 20 on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’

There’s nothing like a showmance —and “So You Think You Can Dance” has turned out to be an especially good breeding ground for love. Which isn’t all that surprising, given how gorgeous and talented its competitors inevitably are. First, winner Lex Ishimoto and third-placer Taylor Sieve fell for each other OK fine, they officially fell for each other before the show began, but still! It was like something out of a romance novel.

(He won SYTYCD Armenia!) But I’m thrilled, too with the season 10 final four: Aaron Turner, Fik-Shun, Jasmine Harper, and Amy Yakima.

Although the two were always standouts from the beginning, they were still very shocked to have won. She dances way longer and more extended. When it came down to it, we were just completely different dancers in different ways. We had an amazing journey. But after the tour and the hype of SYTYCD these two young dancers will have to forge out careers for themselves in the competitive entertainment industry.

Amy has similar thoughts. I want to do movies, I want to do companies, I want to be in a music video, and go on tour with someone. I want to do it all! This dance was a standout of the season.

There were no surprises. She is by far the best reality show host on television, with a quick wit, great humor, and such empathy for the contestants. Fik-Shun and Mariah started the performances with a Luther Brown hip-hop routine. As adorable and engaging as Fik-Shun was during auditions, Mariah stole the stage. It was an effort to watch Fik-Shun because Mariah grabbed all the attention with her exacting power and thrust. He may have his work cut out for him this season.

The judges wanted more artistry and emotion from the dancers, though they loved Makenzie. Nico and Tucker fell out of sync at the end.

6 “SYTYCD” Couples We Stan So Hard

This article is from the archive of our partner. In Part 1, we covered contemporary, jazz, standard ballroom, Bollywood, and disco. His best work from season two came, most improbably, from his collaborations with gawky Mormon swing dancer and eventual season-two champ Benji Schwimmer, including an early routine with Donyelle and a season-capping nerd-fest with Travis Wall.

Still, his best-known routine still stands out from the rest, a Transformers-themed number from season three So cutesy I could kill myself.

Since being on the show, Jasmine Harper has performed in The Boss, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE airs Mondays ( PM ET.

Sound off in the comments below! Good to see everyone back on the stage. Some terrific dancers up there. For some reason, the only judges on the panel are Jason, Paula, and Nigel. Why are two first year judges celebrating a 10 year anniversary? First pre-taped montage. It shows our favorite dancers from the audition stage going through. I forgot about that. A bunch of others.

Disney’s highly anticipated Aladdin is here, but we know better than to expect anything groundbreaking from another needless live-action adaptation. While remake has pleasantly surprised most critics with colorful costumes and charismatic leads, Aladdin ‘s signature songs are its biggest disappointment. From Mashable’s own Angie Han: “Guy Ritchie and his team seem to have no idea how to stage and shoot a musical number,” which is precisely the opposite of what you want to hear about the director of a movie musical much less one who was married to Madonna.

So, where and how did Aladdin botch its opportunities for movie musical greatness? Let us count the ways. Aladdin is tricky to negotiate from a representational standpoint because it was never based on one specific culture. The animated film was an amalgam of Middle Eastern and South Asian visual inspirations, and the live-action takes this at face value, doing the same and adding literally nothing to it. This piece references Bollywood dance numbers a few times, not because of any confusion about where Aladdin takes place, but because India has a booming film industry that thrives on movie musicals that Disney would’ve done well to study.

It’s disappointing to see that in attempting to pay homage to Eastern dance traditions, Aladdin opted to go the So You Think You Can Dance route and whittle these art forms down to what the West already recognizes of them. American reality shows have gladly co-opted Indian dance in particular and repackaged only the most harsh, angular movements which I’ve written about before — and before before — so the end result looks more like fitness than fine art.

Dozens of Middle Eastern dance styles go unknown in the West, while bellydance has been sanitized and mainstreamed for popular consumption, much like yoga. Erasing the grace and expression of these styles strips away what makes them so irresistible to watch in the first place. The dancing in live-action Aladdin features a conspicuously high amount of tutting , which features prominently in funk and hip hop a specialty of choreographer Jamal Sims, who worked on Step Up.
